Each component delivers improvements substantial enough to recommend SBS 2003 to both existing users and newcomers.

Microsoft includes a Quick Start setup chart, guiding you pictorially through the setup steps. But as easy as the Setup Wizard makes things, the only small businesses owners who will be able to set SBS up by themselves are computer professionals. Setting up a network is just too complicated for nontechnical users to do without a consultant or system integrator. We tested the preloaded configuration.

Apart from its greater storage capacity, those familiar with Exchange 2003 won’t see any differences. However, novices will find wizards for virtually every operation. These are designed to keep you away from the innards of SBS, and for good reason: the sheer size of this package makes manual configuration very hard. Client setup is easy, with Outlook and shared fax services automatically deployed, and you can add custom apps to this process. It will also offer to load the Connection Manager for remote workers and ActiveSync for Pocket PC users. The next time a client logs on to a target system, all the selected apps will be automatically loaded and preconfigured.

Saying that Windows 8 is a major shift in strategy for Microsoft is pretty obvious at this point. Between the Metro interface, complete dismissal of the start menu, focus on touch screen devices, and myriad other changes; this is not the Windows of the Bill Gates era. One change which hasn’t received much discussion is the idea of Windows 8 being Microsoft’s next iteration for not only Windows 7, but for Windows Home Server.

It’s no replacement for the on-premises SBS 2011 Standard, of course. I happen to feel that abandoning this product was the right decision, and it’s pretty clear that the current version on the market was just a throwaway for existing customers. Some might disagree with that. But Essentials more closely confirms to the realities of today’s world, I think, and is forward-leaning and simple rather than old-fashioned and complex. It’s also inexpensive: Essentials will set you back just $425. And it will support in-place upgrading to a mainstream Server version if your business grows past 25 users.

Windows 8 offers some new tools which make it easy to create large amounts of redundant storage that may seem familiar if you’ve used Windows Home Server in the past. The storage spaces feature lets you group multiple physical hard drives together into a single storage pool and even provides options for redundancy. Storage spaces are probably a good idea even if you only have a single drive at the moment due to the ability to dynamically expand the size of your volume by adding more drives, much like the drive extender feature familiar to Windows Home Server users.
